Census 2000 Results for
Pennsylvania
The American
FactFinder is the primary way to access Census 2000 data from the
U.S. Census Bureau. While a great site, access to the data is somewhat
cumbersome. The Information & Communication
Technologies (ICT) group has downloaded and prepared this page in
the hope of giving one-stop access to Census Data.
In addition,
here are other sites for Census 2000 data:
The College's
Agricultural Economics and Rural
Sociology Department has a Census
2000 page that has graphs and maps to identify state and local growth
patterns. This analysis is provided by Martin Shields.
The Pennsylvania
State Data Center is the Commonwealth's Official Source of population
and demographic information. They have a great site for Census
2000 data. They include a clickable map of the 2000
Municipal Demographic Profiles by county and their MCD's. This
information is in Adobe PDF format.
The Population
Research Institute of The Pennsylvania State University has page
of Census 2000
Useful Websites and documents relating to the 2000 Census.
The Social
Sciences Library department of the University Libraries has a Census
2000 page.
We hope to add others reports
to this page in time. This information was downloaded and placed on
our College's web site on Oct 8, 2001. Go to the U.S. Census Bureau's
web site for current updates: http://www.census.gov/dmd/www/2kresult.html
If you have FileMaker Pro
on your computer, a FileMaker Pro file called "PA 2K Census" with our
State, County, and Minor Civil Division (MCD) data has been prepared
as well. It is based on the Census 2000 Redistricting (Public Law
94-171) Summary File, which is among the first Census 2000 data
products to be released and is used by each state to draw boundaries
for legislative districts.

FILEMAKER
PRO FILE - What is PA 2K Census?
This zipped file contains a FileMaker Pro file called PA 2K Census.fp3
and a ReadMe document. The FileMaker Pro file has data from the Census
2000 Redistricting Data (Public Law 94-171) Summary File for Pennsylvania
prepared by the U.S. Census Bureau, 2001.The original data from the
U.S. Census Bureau contained summary population counts for two universes,
total population and population 18 years and over. The data was derived
from the basic questions asked on all census questionnaires.
The original
data file contained four tables. This data is available from the American
FactFinder site.
=> Count of ALL persons by race. Table PL1
=> Count of Hispanic or Latino and a count of not Hispanic or Latino
by race for ALL persons. Table PL2
=> Count of the population 18 years and over by race. Table PL3
=> Count of Hispanic or Latino and a count of not Hispanic or Latino
by race for the population 18 years and over. Table PL4
From this original
data, two additional tables were created to reflect the need for youth
numbers.
=> Count of the population 18 years and under by race. Table PL1-PL3
=> Count of Hispanic or Latino and a count of not Hispanic or Latino
by race for the population 18 years and under. Table PL2-PL4

How Do I
Obtain and Use PA 2K Census? Download
(1.5 Mb)
First, download the zipped file. Once downloaded, use Aladdin Expander
[Win] or Stuffit Expander [Mac] to un-compress the zipped file. Your
computer must have FileMaker Pro version 4 to use this file. Macintosh
users (if the file's icon is blank), you must open the file from within
the FileMaker application the first time. If you have a higher version
of FileMaker (FMP 5), you can open and convert this file to that version.
There are three
separate Data Screens. You can switch between these screens using "scripts"
from the Script menu.
The "PL1_PL3 Race Data" screen shows you the data for ALL persons by
race. The totals on this screen do not include Hispanic data.
The "PL2_PL4 Race with Hispanic Data" screen has totals that do include
Hispanic data.
The "PL1_PL2_PL3_PL4 Data" screen allows you to look at both types of
tables at the same time.
In the "PL1_PL3
Race Data" screen and the "PL2_PL4 Race with Hispanic Data" screens,
the first 2 columns are for the current record only. The Found Totals
column will calculate totals for the current found set of records. There
is no column for Total Percentages.
Note: be aware
that if you do a search on "Adams" in the Ext.County field, you will
find the MCD records for Adams county and the summary county record
for Adams county. The Found Totals column will not be what you expect.
Use the TYPE field to limit searches as needed to MCD or County records.
Extra scripts
are available to print and export data as well. If you have FileMaker
Pro experience, you can add layouts of your own.
