Action Item: Windows Defender Spyware Protection

All new Enterprise Network (EN) computers since June 2007 have come with new spyware protection software called Windows Defender. Windows Defender is updated automatically, protects and scans your computer automatically, and works well with Symantec Antivirus to provide ‘complete’ coverage for your computer. The previous anti-spyware programs (Spyware Blaster and Spybot) are still useful tools, but Defender is a better solution for our College Enterprise environment. You do not need to add Spyware Blaster and Spybot to your EN computer if it's new since June 2007

For EN computers acquired before June 2007 you should remove Spybot and Spyware Blaster and install Windows Defender. Here are the steps:

  1. Check to see if Spybot and Spyware Blaster are installed. Do they show up under Start | All Programs?  If they exist, then continue with step #2. If not, then make sure you have Windows Defender installed by checking All Programs.
  2. Remove Spybot and Spyware Blaster.
    1. Use our How To Remove Spybot and Spyware Blaster steps.
  3. Install Windows Defender.
    1. Use our How To Install Windows Defender steps.
